the grocer's apostrophe

photo by nicnac1000 posted on flickrHow much do we love that phrase? I hadn’t heard it before, but it perfectly describes the nails-on-blackboard annoyance of randomly misplaced apostrophes. Or apostrophe’s, as our eponymous grocer would say. [Any grocers out there? Is this phrase disrespectful of grocers?] I figured I wasn’t alone in my crusade against apostrophe abuse. There’s even a flickr photo group documenting some of the worst offenders around the globe.

  1. I love things like that. I mean, the rules of apostrophes aren’t that difficult. I do have some trouble with using the apostrophe after words ending with “S”. I feel that it’s one of those situations where society changed the rule by using it incorrectly for so many years so now I’m not sure what is correct and what is not.

Good stuff. I may have to get it. Last year, I got the Good Grammar Costs Nothing t-shirt and the year before the one that says Reading is Sexy. 🙂

  3. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve received things with Robert’s on it instead of Roberts’. One of my kids even has a personalized blanket embroidered with the misspelling!
