What was your favorite book as a child?

Harriet rocks!
Harriet rocks!

In my Book Brahmin interview, I was only allowed to list one, but I had an ever-changing array as I grew.

Favorite book when you were a child:

SW: Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. I slept with it under my pillow so I could channel Harriet, and started carrying a notebook everywhere I went. I still do that.

Note: Please do not see the movie! It ruins the book. Movies have a nasty habit of doing that, except in certain cases, like The Wizard of Oz.

Other contenders for my favorites:

  • You Were Princess Last Time – Long out of print; don’t recall the author
  • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White – probably the most flawless book ever written
  • The Watchbirds – another out of print, an author/illustrator I can’t recall

So many more. But I’ll shut up. List your childhood faves in Comments.

  • Oh Maria, A Lantern In Her Hand was my favorite book! I also enjoyed “Little Women”, “Sounder”, and a series of mystery books that were written for about third grade readers, can’t remember their names, just that they got me reading. And anything by Beverly Cleary.

  • Winnie the Wombat, Isobel St Vincent
Mrs Wiggs & the Cabbage Patch, Alice Hegan Rice
The Trumpet of the Swans or any Andersen’s Fairy tales
Judy Patrol Leader, Dorothea Moore & Nancy Drew mysteries
The Story of the Southern Highlands, May McNeer

Still have all the original books – which makes me quite old or older.

I had a huge book about Fairies – 36″ x 24″, beautifully illustrated, it seems to be missing, probably one spring cleaning it finally was thrown away. Oh Horrors!

  • You Were Princess Last Time is by Laura Fischer

    my books:
Nancy Drew, I think I read them all
A Lantern in Her hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich
The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder

    Dozens more I am sure
