  • Oh, speaking of “I” and “Me”. I don’t like the confusion between “good” and “well” and “affect” and “effect”.

Just a note that I got a t-shirt for my birthday that says, “good grammar costs nothing” for my birthday. I get comments every time I wear it.

  • Oh, boy, phrase bashing! My favorite! There are so many. I really grit my teeth when I hear “eXcetera” and “congraDulations.” Give me a flyswatter! Makes me wanna smack the speaker. How about “alot” instead of “a lot”? People who say “I” when it should be “me.” I used to have a wonderful boss who would say, “My wife and I’s kids” or “Sandy and I’s jobs.” People who say, “He don’t” instead of “He doesn’t.”

Okay, I gotta stop. I’m starting to hyperventilate.

  • For me, in this local very very rural area……”ya got that right” every other sentence is about all I can take at times. Of course then there are younger people who say “Ya think ???” a lot as well.

    Makes my head hurt.

  • For me its certain words:

“synergy”….who came up with this, anyway?

The overuse and abuse of “sustainability”. Its serious business in a global sense, but there are some that think its just one more fun buzz word for their marketing campaign.

  • I thought I would read all the comments on the original article you sent us to, Susan. When I was there a few minutes ago, reading away, I finally scrolled back up and saw the post had 2,711 comments! I guess more people get excited about language than I realized.

  • Oh, and I know people say this, but I never liked when people say “waiting on line”. Maybe it’s because I’m literal, but unless there’s a line on the ground, you’re waiting in a line. That and I don’t like it when people say punkin instead of pumpkin. Or libarry instead of Library.

  • I really dislike misuse of the word “myself.” An example would be when someone captions a photo “My husband and myself.”

Also, some people in this area say “acrossed” instead of “across.” An example would be, “He lives acrossed the street.” Not a word! Fingernails on a blackboard!

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest…

  • Ach! I say at least two of them. I’m a bad English speaker 😐 The one the bugs me the worst right now is “Whatever”…

“Hey #1, can you get your chores done” #1… *hugesigh* “Whatever”…

    Teens… bah.

  • I really dislike “thinking outside of the box” though I’m sure I’ve used some of those phrases (never shouldn’t of though… EEK!). I mostly dislike “Anyhoo” though I do sometimes.
