This is really the only rolled cookie recipe you need. It’s simple to the point of being boring, but it’s perfect and everybody loves it. Including Clara, of course.

My granddaughter is very particular about sprinkles.

She says her favorite flavor is “Canada Leaf.” There’s no secret other than using real butter and fresh eggs.

All-Purpose Rolled Cookies

1-1/2 c. butter
1-1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 T. vanilla
3 c. flour
1/4 t. salt

Cream butter and sugar; add egg and vanilla; add flour and salt. Roll out
and cut into shapes. Bake at 325 10-12 min. Ice, sprinkle, and enjoy!

This is a basic recipe. You can add spices, like cardamom, cinnamon, and allspice. Or flavorings–extracts of almond, orange, or lemon. Grated orange or lemon peel is nice, too. You can also add different flavors to the icing.

    Susan,

    If I can find time, between packing to move, prior to Christmas and all the other many items I have to do, I hope I can spend time w/my 3 1/2 year-old great granddaughter and we can make these together in our new home. However, just in case it doesn’t happen this year, I’m going to copy and paste your recipe; so we can make it together next years; as she’ll be living only a few miles away. At this point-in-time, we’re about 35 miles apart and don’t get to see her that often. I wish you, Clara (hopefully, I remembered your granddaughter’s name) and all your family a very Merry Christmas.
