Cutest. Boots. Ever.

June 08, 2007

I wish I had more time to work in my garden. But–come to think of it–things are coming along quite nicely without me. Here are some scenes from my yard in the springtime.

beach roses, California poppiesGardening is good for writers because it doesn’t occupy the same channel in the brain as writing does. I should do more of it. There is more power in the plotting done while pruning thgumbootse box hedge than in staring at a blank page for hours.

I’m not a very technical gardener. In this climate, you don’t need to be. Things tend to grow on their own. However, there are two things I always wear while gardening–my Chooka Rockabilly gumboots–because trust me, there is nothing grosser than stepping barefoot on a slug. I also wear those stretchy gloves that look as though they’ve been dipped in rubber–again, it’s the slug thing.

On the other hand, here is a tidbit of writerly wisdom for the day: If you step on a slug with your bare foot first thing in the morning, then you can be pretty sure nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.

  • I live on the sixteenth floor. No grass or slugs. Actually, it’s the city so rarely any bugs at all. I would FREAK OUT. Seriously, I would never leave the house again. We get one baby spider a year, and I carry on like you wouldn’t believe.

Cute boots though! My feet are VERY small, and I can fit into children’s shoes. There are some ladybug boots out now that I totally want, but I can’t justify buying them. As it is, it was hard to justify snow boots when it snows here once a year (and I park in a garage so I’m never actually out in the snow).

Still, you never know when I may have to and I should have the boots just in case… Be prepared and all of that Girl Scout stuff…

  • Susan, does watering the lawn count? 🙂

    Okay, never mind.

I apprecaite those who can garden as I just don’t
seem to have the right touch for it. I do however,
find it relaxing to water the front lawn after a busy
    day at work.

Your garden looks lovely. And love the boots.

  • I have to get me some of those boots. Adorable…
I envy those who garden. I’ve never been much of a gardener.
Hate the bugs buzzing around me, and, yes, those things (slugs, etc) slithering around beneath me. If I had the money, I’d hire someone
to make my home look incredible with flowers, etc., but that’s
not going to be happening for a while. *sigh*
Until then…. I continue admiring yours from a distance, Susan.
Hope your writing is going well. 🙂

  • Your garden looks gorgeous! I moved last fall so everything that pops up in my new yard is a surprise.

Love the boots! I’ve had the experience of stepping on a slug and *eeeewwww* not something I want to repeat!
